Professor Thapelo J. Otlogetswe is Associate Professor of linguistics and lexicography at the University of Botswana. He is a recipient of the Presidential Order of Honour and the foremost expert on corpus linguistics and lexicography of the Setswana language.
His research is in lexical computing and corpus lexicography, in particular, that of Setswana. His research includes work on Setswana names, rhyming patterns in Setswana, genre and text type analysis. He has been involved in the development of Setswana spellcheckers and the compilation of a multi-million token Setswana corpus. He has compiled a number of dictionaries including “Tlhalosi ya Medi ya Setswana”, “English-Setswana Dictionary”, “Oxford English Setswana Setswana English School Dictionary” and ‘Poeletso-medumo ya Setswana: a Setswana Rhyming dictionary’.
He has also co-authored a Setswana orthography book: ‘Mokwalo o o lolameng wa Setswana’. He led the breakthrough translation work on the Setswana Google Search, OpenOffice and Firefox Setswana Spell-checkers. He is a member of the African Academy of Languages, African Association of Lexicography and sits on the editorial boards of Lexikos and Marang Journals.Back to speakers
